Malaysia is a South East Asian country separated by the South China Sea into two geographical regions – Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo’s East Malaysia. It is a young industrialised federation comprising of thirteen states and three territories with the country’s political system, a federal constitutional elected monarchy. The country’s land and maritime borders include Brunei, Indonesia and Thailand and shared maritime borders with Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam. With population of over 32 million, it is one of the world’s populous country with its capital located at Kuala Lumpur, the country’s largest city. However, the city of Putrajaya is the seat of the federal government with the head of government being the Prime Minister, who is elected every five years. Malaysia is one of the world’s mega diverse countries with the country’s environment featuring extensive mountains, rainforests, sandy beaches, mangrove swamps and low plains.It is a tropical country with generous monsoon season and warm weather throughout the year.

Although half the country is ethnically Malay, it is a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic with minorities of Chinese, Indian and indigenous ethnicities. Islam is the country’s established religion although the constitution grants freedom of religion to non-Muslims practicing Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and other minority religions.

In recent years, Malaysia has been steadily emerging as one of the hot spots of study abroad destinations for international students. Besides its very own top-notch educational institutions, many renowned global universities and colleges have their offshore campuses at Malaysia. A recent survey showed that Malaysia is home to over 100 recognised universities with several counted within the top 200 universities in the world.


WHY STUDY IN MALAYSIA ?

  • Malaysian universities provide world class education with the Ministry of Higher Education closely monitoring the country’s tertiary education system, structure and overall standards. The university campuses, infrastructure and state of the art facilities are among one of the best in South East Asia. There are six Malaysian universities that rank in the 2019 QS World Ranking top 500.

  • Several global universities including Australia’s Swinburne University of Technology, Curtin University, Monash University, UK’s University of Southampton, University of Reading and some universities of Ireland and China have their offshore campuses in Malaysia. Studying at any of these FUBCs (foreign university branch campuses) mean that students are awarded qualifications that are identical to the host universities in their home countries.

  • The tuition fees of Certificates, Diplomas, Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees are considerably lower in Malaysian universities in comparison to their western counterparts. The private and foreign universities may have fees that are slightly higher than the public The tuition fees are also lower at the foreign university branch campuses (FUBC) in Malaysia when compared to their host campuses.

  • The cost of living including food, clothing, accommodation, travel and daily expenses is much lower compared to living expenses for international students in the UK, USA or Australia. However, students can expect higher expenses when studying and living in bigger cities like Kuala Lumpur as compared to smaller cities, towns and suburbs. It is mandatory for all international students to have health insurance.

  • Scholarships, partial, fully funded, bursaries, grants, fee waivers and other funding opportunities are available to international students from the Government of Malaysia, non-government organisations, Universities in the country including the foreign university campuses and several associations. These scholarships are competitive, academic merit and extra-curricular activities based with the award amount and eligibility criteria depending on the university or organisation offering the scholarship.

  • Many courses at different levels of study – Certificates, Diplomas, Bachelors and Masters are offered by the colleges, universities and educational institutions are offered in the areas listed – Administration, Aviation, Business, Engineering, Information and Communication Technology, Journalism, Languages, Mass Communication, Medicine and many more.

  • Students are not required to appear for any specific examinations or tests if they plan to study in Malaysian universities and colleges. However, students who wish to study in the foreign universities of the UK and Australia in Malaysia may be required to appear for IELTS or other English proficiency tests as specified by the particular University. The medium of instruction in the universities and colleges is English making education in Malaysia accessible to international students from all across the world.

  • English and Malay are the two most spoken languages in Malaysia. Other languages and dialects that are also spoken in the country also include Cantonese, Mandarin, Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil.

  • International students are allowed to work part-time for 20 hours per week are encouraged to work in mini markets, restaurants, cafes, hotels and petrol stations.

  • Malaysia is one of the safest and politically stable countries in South East Asia with relatively low crime rate. Malaysia was also ranked 19th out of 150+ countries as one of the most peaceful countries.

  • When students are not busy studying, Malaysia offers a range of free-time activities and attractions in the thrilling metropolitan Kuala Lumpur or in the scenic and natural wonders of this beautiful, friendly and culturally rich country.
