Ireland, a country in western Europe occupies the majority of the western most portion of the British Isles, making it the second largest island of the British Isles and the third largest in Europe. Geopolitically, it is divided between the Republic of Ireland (Ireland) and Northern Ireland which is part of the United Kingdom. The emergence of Ireland as an independent nation is fairly recent when it formally exited the Commonwealth in 1949 as the Republic of Ireland. With a population of over 5 million, it is the second most populous island in Europe after Great Britain. The capital city, Dublin is urban and affluent is home to almost one-fourth of the country’s population. Cork in the south-west is the country’s second largest city while Waterford, Wexford, Galway, Limerick are principal centres scattered along the east and the west coast. The scenic countryside consists of undulating plains, coastal highlands, mountain ranges and lowlands with many lakes, large bog areas and low ridges which provide evidence of a complex geologic history. The predominant influence of the Atlantic Ocean makes for an extremely moderate temperate climate, frequent rainfall and lush vegetation with uniform temperatures all across the island.
